tips for online transactions

July 25, 2008

Good Morning!

We’ve said it before, but we thought we’d say it again:

If you’re doing any type of transaction on the internet for any type of product or service anywhere on the internet, Do NOT use wire services such as Western Union or Moneygram. EVER. If there is a problem, it’s virtually impossible to recover your money. If you must wire money, wire from your bank account to the other person’s bank account. We know this sounds silly, but it’s an important online safety tip.

Remember, there are people online who pray on the less internet savvy. This is what these people do for a living, and they do it all day long and they’re good at it. They’re easy to identify, but hard to catch, so don’t be fooled. If someone asked you to Western Union them money for a service, nine times out of ten they’re not legitimate.

Take a look at our Frequently Asked Questions page entitled What you need to know before giving any type of deposit for more tips that you can apply to virtually any online transaction.

On the other hand, many legitimate businesses accept Western Union and Moneygram, as well they should. This doesn’t mean that they are illegitimate. Businesses understand that not everyone has a credit card or checking account, and they want to accommodate all customers and allow them to pay as they see fit. It’s easy to check into an established business and see if they’re OK. First off, give them a call – if you can’t find a number for them anywhere, that’s not a good sign, although many online businesses are not great about giving you their number and they are legitimate businesses. You can call Sublet.com any time at 201-845-7300 and we do accept Western Union. But, if you do get a phone number and it’s invalid, you pretty much have your answer. You can also see if they are registred with the Better Business Bureau at bbb.org. If you know where the business is based, its much easier to find them (for example, we’re based in NJ).

for a final word on this, Western Union is not a bad service by any means – in fact, it’s a great service which was founded in the 1850s and continues to serve over 250,000 locations in over 200 countries. It’s fast, simple, and easy to use. They have a section about online fraud on their site here.

have a nice, safe weekend!
